Former President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted the high cost of data in Ghana, attributing it to a lack of competition within the telecom sector.
Speaking to the youth during a town hall meeting in observance of International Youth Day, Mahama pointed out that one telecommunications company dominates the market due to its extensive network, allowing it to set higher prices.
He emphasized that fostering competition among telecom providers is essential for reducing data costs, noting that smaller players like Airtel and Glo lag behind, leaving Vodafone and MTN as the primary competitors.
Mahama also mentioned the potential of satellite internet as an emerging technology that could drive down data prices by introducing more competition. He underscored the importance of adopting 5G technology to enhance internet speeds, which would enable the use of advanced technologies such as AI, ultimately improving the digital experience for Ghanaians.
